My Daily Life: The Boring Part

Posted by Shan at 3:28 PM
Hello all. I haven't updated this blog in a while, but fear not, I have about 6 pages of stuff to share.

With pretty much everyone gone, i've settled into a daily routine reminiscent of one of those drama movies following the life of a lonely immigrant in a strange foreign land, trying to make a living for themselves. On most days I wake up around 7 am (ugh) drop my brother at school in case mom has to go to meetings (dad's in india for an extended period of time). I've made a large list of all the things that are wrong with the house that can be fixed with some small purchases at random store and perhaps no more than thirty minutes of labor. I managed to replace all the fluorescent bulbs at home, so now our bathrooms are bright and lively! I've bought new phones for the house, fixed all the drawers and cabinets at home that were loose, rewired the outdoor speaker system so I could control from inside the house, etc.

The OCD part of me loves doing all this: fixing what's broken, replacing old used gadgets with new shiny ones...but obviously it leaves much to be desired in terms of social interaction. I stopped at the back recently, trying to deposit a bunch of checks and money that i've collected over the last couple of months, and then I saw this guy who used to be in my class in 7th grade. He's black, his name's oke (pronounced Oh-kee). We weren't exactly friends, but we got along by sitting in the back of class and mocking our eccentric crazy black english teacher. We were about the same height i remember, same build. Now however, as i stood in my jeans shorts and berkeley sweatshirt, unshaven with my scratched glasses that really need replacing, at 5 feet 4 inches, i was rather amazed at how different we were. A good 6.5 feet tall, he was the very image of a guy who was trying desperately to be in organized crime. As he leaned on the counter to talk to the bank representative, his shirt bunched up at the back, and i could see his gun, it was a very interesting experience for me to show where our different paths to high school had led us, i guess.

All these errands have my driving a lpt, legally, for once....Its not as enjoyable when it's legal you know? Mom only rarely lets me take the new car out, and i make a point to call neelaysh or whoever from the car phone each time as i speed down that awesome hill next to Neil's house at 60-65 mph. However, i prefer my car..yeah i know its an 11 year old Lexus that's more focused on comfort instead of perform-ace, but its a very smooth car. It looks pretty great for a car its age, hopefully when I finally get the insurance to agree with a body shop i pick, i can fix up all the tiny dents/dings/scratches its accumulated so it can regain some of its lost sexiness. (I find it hilarious that sexiness isn't a misspelled word, dunno why) I don't usually speed, or drive aggressively, even when Santosh encourages me to...I think it may be because I used up all my adrenaline and thrills driving a car illegally when i was 11..so in a way thats a good thing. Now if Rohit's in the car next to me, thats different. I can't help but push him to his limits (he's not as easily excitable as he used to be :( )

Neelaysh often insists that i'm pretty much a married man with all the responsibilities i'm taking on, minus the wife. And while i disagree with the married notion, i do feel like that middle aged-bored old man that's looking for anything to excite him (don't take that the wrong way..), its so tedious paying bills, talking to insurance companies, doing the same monotonous chores at the same time every week, fixing up the house, filling gas, buying groceries. But hey, at least i can look forward to some of the fun stuff I'm planning on doing, Berkeley orientation isn't too far away, then I'm hoping to fly out to St. Louis and visit neelaysh, maybe spend Halloween in Berkeley (Rohit and i found a perfect costume to wear in oakridge recently) so that's what keeps me going without losing my mind i suppose

Wow that took care of .5 pages out of the six i have to post, i think i'll cut this post off here and upload the next part a little later. Now that i've gotten the boring stuff out of the way i'll start telling everyone about the crazy stories i have :D
